Alessandra Sanguinetti photographs California’s homeless working families, Trent Parke speaks about his latest project, Dennis Stock’s California Trip reviewed, and more from Magnum this week
Alessandra Sanguinetti photographs homelessness for The California Sunday Magazine
California’s Salinas Valley, known as the ‘salad bowl of the world’ produces much of the United States’ lettuce and green vegetables, and is home to an $8billion agricultural economy. Yet many of the same fertile region’s 19,000 farmworkers are faced by stagnant wages, malnutrition, the threat of deportation at the hands of ICE, and homelessness.
Alessandra Sanguinetti photographed the workers and landscapes at the heart of this tale of disparity for The California Sunday Magazine, you can see the feature here.
Watch Trent Parke discuss his new work
In a short film for Australia’s ABC News, Trent Parke discusses his working practice and his newest project, which sees him photographing what he calls ‘the crimson line’ – the periods of the day five minutes before the sun comes up, and five minutes after it sets. In the film, now available on YouTube, Parke delves into his shooting routines, as well as the origins of crimson (a colour central to the new work) as a pigment derived from the crushing of insects.
Dennis Stock’s California Trip on Feature Shoot
“Stock’s photographs do what the best photography can: they evoke a powerful sense of time and place so that the images become embedded in our collective memory.” So writes Miss Rosen in an article for Feature Shoot on Dennis Stock’s famed late sixties coverage of California. From surfers to Satanists and hippies, squares and dropouts, Stock created a unique portrait of the Golden State at the height of its countercultural heyday.
You can read Rosen’s write up here, and see more work from the series on Magnum, here.
A selection of Dennis Stock’s images from California are available as fine prints on the Magnum Shop, here.
