Tourists and locals swim and sunbathe at the top of the Marina Bay Sands building which has a hugely popular and now iconic infinity pool with a view of Singapore's central business district and city skyline. I certainly feel like a stranger in my own land here, in several ways, not least because I don't recognise much of the skyline. Singapore has also, in the seven years I've been away, experienced an influx of migrants, especially from mainland China and India. With its two casinos in what are locally called "integrated resorts", Singapore has also become a destination for luxury travel and high-end shopping -- in a way it wasn't when I was growing up.
