Emin Özmen accompanies migrant rescue mission on Aegean sea
Libération recently commissioned Emin Özmen to document a rescue mission on the Aegean sea, near the point where Turkish and Greek territory meets. During the mission 18 migrants attempted crossing from Marmaris to Rhodes, and were repelled by Greek border patrol. The group consisted of refugees from Syria and Gaza. Jérôme Sessini documents ‘Article 24’ demonstrations
A proposed amendment to security laws in France, which would make it an offence to film and identify police officers under certain conditions, have been met with protests in Paris. These actions have prompted the French government to promise a “re-write” of the bill. Jérôme Sessini was present to document the demonstrations, pictures of which appeared this week in the print edition of De Standaard magazine.
Danny Lyon interviewed for The New York Times
The New York Times has spoken to Danny Lyon about his career and activism in a new interview. Lyon discusses his photography and films — including the recent release of ‘SNCC’, a 75-minute documentary on the student-led civil rights group, told through the story of John Lewis, its former chairman, and later, the US congressman. Daleside featured in Creative Review
Creative Review has published a feature on Lindokuhle Sobekwa and Cyprien Clément-Delmas’ new photobook, Daleside. The publication explores the lives of residents of the largely white-Afrikaner-populated Johannesburg suburb of Daleside. Paolo Pellegrin’s Mosul image in The Guardian
The Guardian has published Paolo Pellegrin’s image of a girl on the road to Mosul, Iraq, taken in 2016. As part of their regular ‘big picture’ feature, the newspaper shared the context behind the photograph, describing the story of the village of Buharbuq, whose residents were fleeing ISIS when Pellegrin made the image. The Adventures of Guille and Belinda on Huck magazine
Huck magazine has shared a feature on Alessandra Sanguinetti’s latest book, The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer. “With the videos and conversations I recorded, I started to see how the things they said that they were afraid of, or fantasised about, became realised later on,” the photographer told the magazine. Bruno Barbey’s images in The National of UAE
The UAE.-focused online platorm, The National, has shared a portfolio of images Bruno Barbey made during the country’s formation in 1971, which includes images of the fifth anniversary celebration of the accession of Sheikh Zayed. See the piece here.
Martin Parr’s Ireland book recommended by The Times
The Times’ list of Irish photography books of the year has included From the Pope to a Flat White, Ireland 1979-2019 by Martin Parr. The newspaper selected “the year’s most evocative pictures” which provided an incisive view of Irish history. See the list here.
