Magnum photographers in TIME‘s ‘Best Photojournalism of 2020’ list

Newsha Tavakolian, Peter van Agtmael, Emin Özmen, Lorenzo Meloni, and Matt Black all featured in TIME‘s run down of 2020’s best reportage images. Tavakolian’s coverage of the mourning of Qasem Soleimani, van Agtmael’s work on the US 2020 election, Özmen’s photographs of stranded migrants in Turkey, Meloni’s documenting of Italy’s battle with Covid-19, and Matt Black’s long-term work on poverty in the United States can all be seen in the full list, here.

Tavakolian and van Agtmael’s images were also included in TIME’s top ten photos of the year. You can see that list here.

Magnum photographers’ work in Libération‘s year in review

Peter van Agtmael, Alex Majoli, and Emin Özmen were included in the French daily’s curation of powerful images from 2020 – which the publication described as “L’anne furieuse”. Özmen’s coverage of migrants in Turkey was again cited, while Majoli’s black and white work on Sicaly’s efforts to control Covid-19, and Peter van Agtmael’s pictures of the Trump campaign trail were also included. Sabiha Çimen shoots for The New York Times and reflects on 2020

The 2020 Magnum nominee Sabiha Çimen photographed the family of Bie Lun Leung for the NYT feature: A Holiday Haunted by Loss. The article profiled a number of familes who have lost loved ones to Covid-19 as they experienced their  respective holidays. You can see the feature here.

Çimen also recently spoke with 1854 Media about the last year and the music, books, films, and ways of relaxing that got her through it – from Maria Callas to Stanley Kubrik to vacuuming. You can read the interview here. Learn more about Çimen’s work here, on Magnum.

Capturing the Holidays via Zoom

Thomas Dworzak‘s ongoing project capturing scenes of digital socializing in the face of global Covid-19 restrictions was covered in Vogue, where a selection of his images – grabbed from various Zoom calls – depicted end of year holidays around the world. Guille and Belinda featured on Refinery 29

Alessandra Sanguinetti’s decades-long project on the lives of her two muses, Guille and Belinda, has been written up on Refinery 29. The “richly lit and dreamlike” images span the lives of the two cousins, from childhood to motherhood. Raymond Depardon’s image curation for L’Obs

A feature in French weekly news magazine L’Obs sees Raymond Depardon curating a selection of images which, to his eye, capture the key events of 2020. His list includes works by Antoine d’Agata, Peter van Agtmael, Enri Canaj, and Lorenzo Meloni. You can see the full selection in this week’s print edition.

Knit Club in The Guardian

The Guardian’s regular ‘big picture’ feature recently focused on Carolyn Drake’s newly released book, Knit Club. The book, ‘a foreboding meditation in the vein of Southern Gothic literature’ is the result of Drake’s collaboration with an enigmatic group of women known as the Knit Club. Guy Le Querrec in Le Monde

The front page of the December 30 edition of French daily Le Monde featured Guy Le Querrec‘s portrait of renowned French-Italian fashion designer Pierre Cardin, who died on December 29 at 98 years old. Read the accompanying feature on the designer in the paper’s print edition.

Patrick Zachmann’s long term work on Notre Dame de Paris

French Magazine Point de Vue ran a selection of images from Patrick Zachmann‘s ongoing documenting of efforts to refurbish Notre Dame de Paris following the catastrophic fire that broke out on the evening of April 15, 2019. The story focuses in particular on the restoration of the catherdral’s gargantuan organ.

Martin Parr’s vision of Ireland

Lampoon Magazine fatured Martin Parr’s new book From the Pope to a Flat White: Ireland 1979 – 2019. The article shares a selection of images from the monograph, which spans 40 years of Parr’s work in the nation, capturing rapid change alongside adherence to tradition. Antoine d’Agata’s book recommended by Another Magazine

Antoine D’Agata’s recent book, which brings together 27 of his photographs and 25 graphic works by the figurative painter Francis Bacon has been included in Another’s list of the best books of 2020. You can see the full list here.
