Sofa Sessions is a video series that sees Martin Parr in conversation with photographers at the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol. Each video features an established or emerging practitioner who joins Parr to discuss their photographic process, experience and inspirations. This episode sees Martin Parr in conversation with Magnum photographer Alec Soth.
Soth discusses working with Joel Sternfeld, trying not to be influenced by what’s ‘cool’, and how he published his first major project Sleeping by the Mississippi. He goes on to describe entering the art world while working in editorial photography, just barely making it into the collective of Magnum photographers, and how he ‘started over’ with his publication I Know How Furiously Your Heart is Beating.
Sofa Sessions are produced by the Martin Parr Foundation and filmed and edited by Alex Parkyn-Smith. Watch more episodes here.
Soth reflects further on his practice, explains how to build photographic projects, and reflects on overcoming creative challenges in his online course, Alec Soth: Photographic Storytelling. Learn more here.
