Description
Magnum Photos is proud to partner with Light Society to deliver a workshop with Magnum photographer Mark Power in Beijing, China between September 27 and October 3, 2024.
Located in the Shunyi District on the outskirts of Beijing, this workshop will include a daily shooting routine where participants will be asked to work in their immediate surroundings. Encouraged by Mark’s extensive experience of making long-term projects in peripheral spaces, you’ll be tasked with completing a short, sharp photographic series over the course of five days in response to the local ‘landscape’.
Mark writes: “In any city there are places which tourists are encouraged to visit and, as a result, these become the most photographed locations. This workshop is the antithesis of that, since it’s based in the Beijing suburbs, close to the Capital International airport, and 20 miles (32 km) from the city centre. Starting with the principle that it is possible to make interesting, intriguing and (sometimes) beautiful pictures anywhere, the workshop will encourage participants to investigate and closely observe the local area in order to produce work that could, in future, be built upon, and to dispel the myth that some places are more ‘photogenic’ than others. Speaking personally, the more uninviting a place – the more difficult it would seem to make ‘good’ pictures – the more I like it. I want to share that enthusiasm with you, in order to get you to think differently about where, and how, you might photograph in the future.”
In the workshop you’ll receive guidance on your photographic style, develop a distinctive approach to your subject, and work in a group setting with others. Participants will come together on the first day for a lecture from Mark about some of his own projects, and you’ll be asked to present your existing work to each other. Over the next three days you’ll be shooting new pictures and will receive feedback in group reviews, as well having an overview of how other photographers have worked in peripheral spaces. The final day will be dedicated to editing and sequencing your work with one-to-one assistance from Mark, who has a reputation for careful, meaningful sequencing. He will share the techniques he’s used for his own books, and take you through the bookmaking process from start to finish.
