Description

Explore Sarajevo’s archives with Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas and the help of Sumeja Tulic, PhD student of Cultural Anthropology, a Sarajevo native who will assist you during the week. This workshop is part of our Inside>>Out program.

Join us in Sarajevo for an immersive photography workshop led by renowned Magnum photographer Susan Meiselas. This unique experience offers a deep dive into the complex history of Sarajevo, inviting you to explore the city’s rich and multifaceted past through its archives and through direct engagement with its residents.

You will work directly with archival materials, including public records, personal collections, and photographic archives, as well as texts and testimonies that capture the essence of Sarajevo’s legacy. In addition to archival work, you will explore the streets of Sarajevo to capture contemporary portraits, conduct interviews, and visually narrate the city’s evolving story.

Susan Meiselas, who is known for her powerful documentary work that often involves sensitive historical contexts, will be your mentor, guiding you in finding your unique perspectives. The workshop will culminate in a presentation of each participant’s work, offering insights into the ways archives can be revitalized through contemporary photography.

Ahead of the workshop, you will receive a list of resources to help you learn about the country and the city. This will allow you to familiarize yourself with the place and its history, sparking ideas for projects you can develop once you’re on site. Sumeja Tulic, PhD student of Cultural Anthropology, will also help you gather information and meet people living in the capital.
