Bolton Hope Foundation is proud to launch its first photography competition for emerging photographers living in Italy to work on the theme of Education.
In partnership with Magnum Photos, the winner will receive a grant of 5000€ and a mentorship from Magnum photographer Alex Majoli and Magnum’s Global Education Director Sonia Jeunet.
The applications are now closed. The winner will be announced on 15 September.

Entry Rules
- Participants should have an existing project idea on the theme of Education (in particular on prevention of early school leaving, promotion of education for sustainable development and promotion of innovative didactic methods), that they would like to further develop for this commission.
- Open for professional photographers with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 years of experience making/and or publishing visual stories in the fields of photojournalism and documentary photography.
- Open for photographers living in Italy, regardless of nationality.
Your entry can be submitted in either English or Italian.
Portfolio submission
- The application should include a motivation letter (max. 500 words), with a CV, a short bio.
- A portfolio of 30 pictures, consisting of 1 or 2 stories maximum with a brief story description (150-200 words) for each story.
- The portfolio should include recent work, made in the last five years. Projects that have started more than five years ago are accepted if half of the pictures are made in the last five years.
- Brief description of how the applicant would like to develop the theme “Education”.
Incomplete submissions will not be considered.
Who should apply
This competition aims to support a photographer at mid-level of their career with professional recognition, financial support, a commission with a renowned organisation and a mentoring that will accompany them in the making of their work.
We are particularly keen on receiving submissions from photographers engaged in long-term projects centred around the theme of Education, and who are seeking to take their project and their career to the next level.
The selected photographer will be chosen based on their demonstrated dedication towards advancing their career in photography. We will assess entries based on the cohesion of the body of work submitted as well as how this opportunity will benefit their practice and personal development.
Please note that this is opportunity is open to Italian photographers and photographers based in Italy regardless of nationality.
