Description

Bio

Emin Özmen, born in 1985, has dedicated his career to documenting human rights violations in Turkey and around the world, focusing on the suffering of victims of civil unrest and social injustice. Özmen’s commitment to long-term documentary projects stems from his belief in the power of photography to bring attention to critical issues. He studied photography at the Fine Arts Faculty at Marmara University in Istanbul and later obtained a degree in documentary photography from the University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria.

Özmen’s work spans a diverse array of global crises, including famine in East Africa, the earthquake-tsunami disaster in Japan, economic protests in Greece, the Syrian civil war, and the IS crisis in Iraq. His extensive portfolio also covers conflicts and humanitarian issues in South Sudan, Niger, Nigeria, Venezuela, Azerbaijan, and Turkey. His impactful images have been featured in prominent publications such as Time magazine, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Der Spiegel, Le Monde magazine, Paris-Match and Newsweek.

Özmen became a full member of Magnum Photos in 2022. He currently resides in Istanbul.

Mentorship

In addition to his photographic practice, Özmen is deeply invested in mentoring photographers who are committed to long-term documentary projects. His mentorship philosophy centers on creating a dynamic exchange that boosts the mentees’ work and addresses their questions and doubts. Özmen’s approach is holistic, as he explains his aim is to guide participants through a “creative process, to discover how to critically examine the storytelling approach: from shooting to post-production and editing”. He emphasizes the importance of working with various media, including text, video, and sound, to craft compelling narratives.

Özmen’s mentorship is designed to foster critical thinking and enhance the storytelling capabilities of his mentees. By sharing his extensive experience and providing constructive feedback, he aims to help photographers find their voice.
