For the first time in the Netherlands, Museum Helmond presents an overview of the best-known photo series by the Magnum photographer, Alec Soth: Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), Niagara (2006), Broken Manual (2010), Songbook (2014) and I Know How Furiously Your Heart is Beating (2018).
With his work from the first four series, Soth paints a picture of everyday life in twenty-first century America. The dramatic landscapes of his homeland—the majestic Mississippi, the thundering Niagara Falls, the vast deserts and wilderness, the small towns and suburbs—structure and set the stage for his poetic explorations of everyday life in America. He recently added a personal account of special encounters in Europe and the US with I Know How Furiously Your Heart is Beating.
The title of the exhibition There is Always Something to Find refers to Soth’s attitude to being open to your environment and chance. Precisely by not looking for something forcibly, but recognizing that you can find something valuable everywhere.
The exhibition includes approximately 80 large-format photographic works, dozens of authentic documents and a short video portrait.
