Description

In this workshop led by Carolyn Drake in New York, you are invited to push against the grain of documentary traditions by experimenting with collaboration, collage, and a set of constraints that will challenge your creativity.

After an initial group discussion to get a sense of where everyone is at, Carolyn will give daily assignments that invite you to step outside of your comfort zone into a creative space where failure is possible. Based on situations she has encountered while developing her own projects, these exercises will encourage you to push your practice in ways that you might feel uncertain or anxious about. As part of these daily assignments, you will be expected to experiment with subjects, processes and constraints that break documentary traditions. As Carolyn explains, “often photographers hesitate to break away from what they think is the ‘right’ way to do things. We want you to try out your odd or unusual instincts instead of shutting them down”.

This workshop will offer a safe and constructive environment for you to identify and experiment with approaches that you are curious about but have so far hesitated to pursue.
