Having won more than 65 per cent of the vote, Emmanuel Macron defeated Marine Le Pen to become the next president of France on May 7, 2017. At 39, he will be the youngest president in French history. This is the first election for Macron, whose centrist En Marche! party sent shockwaves through the political establishment when he announced his candidacy in November of 2016.
As news of Macron’s victory was announced, Magnum’s Matt Stuart and Thomas Dworzak were on the streets of Paris to capture reaction. However, the celebratory scenes belie divisions in France, where his opponent, the far-right nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen scored over one third of the vote. In his victory speech, the incoming president pledged to re-invigorate the French economy and fight the poverty and unemployment that he believes have led to these divisions.
