Larry Towell Cannon Ball, North Dakota, USA. September, 2016.
“The Standing Rock protest camp in North Dakota marked a historic change in the way North American native people would respond to the invasion
(...) of their last remaining communal lands by Big Oil and federal government. For a year, the Oceti Sakowin camp on the banks of the Cannonball River withstood intimidation, police violence, private security infiltration, and bitter winter cold until it was forcibly dismantled in February, 2017. From there, activists fanned out across America to spawn protests that continue to challenge land title, indigenous sovereignty, and environmental impact. This was also the first time I shot digital black and white.”
