Raghu Rai Shifting sands. Hooghly River, Kolkata, India. 2004.
“Scores of men were rowing a large boat full of sand. Even while standing on the riverbank, I felt the enormous physical power being exerted t
(...) o move the heavy boat in the middle of the river. I stood watching, but the distance was too great to capture the dynamism of forms, lines, and human bodies all working together in rhythm.
I got on another boat, and was able to get very close to them to take more pictures. But the magic was still missing, as I wasn’t close enough to capture their strength coordinated with their expressions. So, I jumped onto their boat, stood right in front of them, and filled my frame with the intensity that is required with a subject matter such as this one.”
