The armed Libyan smugglers were escorting a rubber boat full of migrants to international waters off the Libyan coast when a Libyan Coast Guard patrol encountered them in the sea. The smugglers refused to surrender, and instead opened fire on the Libyan Coast Guard boat, a shootout ensued in which four smugglers were killed, and a fifth one went missing after falling overboard.
