Burt Glinn The head cheerleader and the football captain embrace after a game. Their team had just won for the first time in three years. Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. 1955.
“After graduating from Harvard and
(...) serving in the war, Burt was assigned to cover the Northwest. LIFE magazine used his pictures a great deal at the time.
The Seattle people loved him. He was very much a part of the culture out there. He covered every aspect of Seattle life – the artists, the working class, the farmers, the truly rich. Burt loved photographing high schools. There’s life. There’s action. He felt very much a part of the youthful spirit.
This photograph captures so well this time period. It recalls the American Bandstand, for instance. And of course, it recalls the connection we have with sports, whether personal or cultural. This image is currently in the Brooklyn Museum’s traveling exhibition, Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present.”
