"Taken toward the end of the First Chechen War, in the outskirts of Grozny, this seeming
(...) ly quiet moment was encapsulated by chaos and drama: the Russians had moved in and people everywhere were fleeing. The kid in this picture can roam around, smoke cigarettes, do teenage things, but in fact he is in the midst of a horrible situation.
Freedom was very important in the context of both the First and Second Chechen wars; the rallying cry for Chechen independence was 'freedom or death.'"
