Beyond the Single Image: Panel Discussion

Alec Soth and Cristina de Middel join a panel discussion on Spanish photography and the notion of "iconic images" in contemporary society

Earlier this month, Alec Soth and Cristina de Middel participated in an online panel discussion exploring the evolving role of photography in both national and international contexts, organized by the Foto Colectania Foundation in Barcelona, and in collaboration with The Margulies Collection at The Warehouse in Miami.

The event began with a survey of the recent changes in photography by Joan Fontcuberta, followed by a panel discussion with Soth, De Middel, Adriana López Sanfeliu, David Campany of the International Center of Photography in New York, and Carles Guerra. Topics included how the medium of photography has changed in the past 75 years, the impact of photography in an ever-evolving social landscape, and the notion of an “iconic” image in contemporary society.

This Panel Discussion was organized in light of the exhibition “Beyond the Single Image. Spanish Photography from the Foto Colectania Collection” in Miami, which includes the work of Magnum photographers Cristina Garcia Rodero and Cristina de Middel. The exhibition runs until April 2, 2025. Plan your visit here.
